Holy moley....this book has a lot of footnotes. Very well researched and presented. I read this for pleasure, but it could easily be incorporated into a college course. I don't get the...."Making of Modern Japan" part. Bix presents a very strong case for labeling Hirohito as a hawk emperor who should have been convicted as a war criminal, but doesn't really explain how his legacy has affected Japan today.
