"in a world of extreme beauty anyone normal is ugly."

Tally is about to turn sixteen which means she is about to have an operation that turns her from ugly to beautiful. Before her birthday she meets Shay, who isn't like most uglies. She doesn't want to have the operation and instead runs away in the unknown world outside of Uglyville and New Pretty Town.
Tally is then given a choice, find her friend or never turn pretty at all and grow up old, decrepit and ugly.

I picked up this book because the plot sounding pretty promising but I wasn't prepared for the deep writing and meaningful metaphors about how we perceive beauty and deception. All the characters were compelling, especially Tally who although betrayed her friends and her love, David, seeks to always make things right.

If you liked the Hunger Games you'll really like this book as well.
