This story is rather simple. A old man wakes up in a small, locked room, but cannot remember who he is or how he got there. Throughout the day he is visited by various people he has a special connection to, people he sent out on missions. He feels incredibly guilty about what he has done to these people. There is also a mysterious text on the desk in the room. The text tells a story about an alternate version of the early United States, a story Auster fans will recognize from a previous work.
I found this book to be incredibly readable, despite the fact that I hadn't read any other Paul Auster novels. Those who do read Auster's other works first will find themselves rewarded. All of the characters in Travels in the Scriptorium with the exception of the main character have leapt from previous novels. This is a work of metafiction, playing with the concept of where fictional worlds meet reality.
