While in Lands Unknown, I visited Former Place of Employment for a book-fix, and bought a book called Rainbow Boys, about three boys in high school struggling with being gay. Jason, a basketball jock, has a girlfriend and once fooled around with another boy when he was ten, which apparently made him gay-curious, so he goes to a "Rainbow Youth Group" meeting to find out some more about his 'feelings.' To his horror, he sees two boys from his school there: Nelson (Nelly) The School flamer who's the most annoying fag in the history of literature, and Kyle, who, though incredibly boring and nerdy, is the least obnoxious character in the book.
Nelly gets beat up and ostracized for being a huge blinking neon advertisement for The Church of Flaming Homosexuality ("Bless me Father, for I am FABULOUS!"), Kyle comes out to his boring parents, who have a boring reaction, Kyle has a crush on "I'm not sure if I'm gay or not even though I imagined Kyle's face while I was ...more
