I found Arthur Kipps' story bleak, if not depressing, but not entirely negative. As the story begins with the end of his life, I was comforted in the knowledge that he, at least, lives to tell the tale. Susan Hill's descriptive writing had me enthralled and holding my breath in anticipation of impending disasters for most of the time. She does warn us of an unhappy ending with Arthur Kipps' reluctance to tell his tale. However, in spite of superb writing, only 3 stars for me simply because, personally, if there are to be ghosts I prefer them to be benevolent ones.
