first and foremost, this is totally the kind of writing i fall for-- a genre-hopping mix of memoir, history, poetry, philosophy and art criticism. solnit's writing reminds me of several of my favorite people-- imagine a more inviting roland barthes, a more introspective chris marker, a more conversational anne carson. the book follows a seemingly intuitive path from one observation to the next-- not everything is brilliant, but at its very deepest it achieves a remarkable lightness. this is the kind of book you need to put down and think about from time to time. i'm excited to read the rest of her work.
