Would it serve as a passable disclaimer to admit that I know less about the history of the Roman Republic than, really, the revolving cast of fools who nightly advertise our country's stupidity on Jaywalking? But, see, that was before I read this sound primer on the thing and if you are where I was, I give Rubicon a gushing recommendation with its own disclaimer: Tom Holland makes stuff up. But, no, it doesn't matter much and he makes it conveniently obvious when he does so allowing you to disregard those passages, as I did, liberally. The best character you've never heard of will be Mithridates the Great, eighth King of Pontus, outracer of deer, outwrestler of lions, transparent prototype to the toxically-inoculated Man in Black of The Princess Bride and guarantor to have you LOLing on the train. And, if you've already heard of him, superb for me-- please recommend some additional reading material!
