Temple is a truly brilliant writer. His ear for dialogue is spot on - clipped yet lingering.

The problems I have with Peter Temple's work is that his writing often distracts me from the story. Eg: I stop to work out what he is actually doing writing-wise. It often leaves me in awe.

That said, Temple, frustrates the hell out of me. He's so close to being brilliant, but the central figure of Cashin is just too much the typical worn-out detective. I need more.

Of course, this still doesn't stop me from recommending this book to those who like good crime fiction... even if you aren't Australian. Temple has some serious writing chops on display and very few times does he falter.
