Sold, by Patricia McCormick, tells the story of a thirteen year old girl from Nepal who is sold into prostitution by her step father. Lakshmi, who is eager to help her mother and baby brother, believes that she is being sent to the city to work for a rich family. She is scared, but proud that she will be able to make enough money to buy a tin roof for her family’s home. McCormick writes this story in simple, short chapters, and at times it feels like you are reading poetry. The story is told in first person narrative, and because of this the reader gets right inside the heart of Lakshmi.
