This was an ARC from the publisher.
Engaging thriller with a likeable, flawed narrator. Keye Street is a recovering alcoholic whose successful criminal profiling career went down the drain due to her drinking. She's a humorous and highly intelligent narrator, if a bit overly dramatic at times, as she helps Atlanta PD track a serial killer.
Williams lays down some red herrings while weaving in Street's side endeavors as she balances the serial killer case with making a living. However, I got a little confused with the contrived resolution, partially because I started skimming a bit. Williams prose is verbose when considering the action and plot. (Tana French or Louise Penny she is not, never delving that deep into the psychological/cultural elements.) I guess with this being a series launch, though, the need to establish and flesh out the characters and setting is forgivable.
What I really appreciated, though, was that (view spoiler)
I liked this more than the Chelsea Cain novel I read earlier this year, but not as much as the two authors I previously mentioned. 2.5 stars: Recommended for thriller fans who don't mind things getting a bit grisly and graphic.
