Definitely a new writing talent, and she introduces the reader to characters in 'historical' and geographical settings which have barely brushed the consciousness of the modern Brit. Having said that I only really felt sympathy for the 'simpleton' servant and the cruelty of his demise hit hard. Perhaps the author is too hard on her main characters, but who am I to judge?
