Elizabeth Berg, much to her own surprise, based two of the main characters in this book on real people (in response to a letter from one of her fans), although the story is fiction.
Set in Tupelo, Mississippi during the historic summer of 1964, it tells the story of an exceptional woman who is paralyzed and on a respirator and raising her teenage daughter with the help of their black caregiver. It’s very moving and often inspiring. Although this is 13-year-old Diana’s story, the memorable characters are the adults. I wish I could meet Paige and Peacie and LaRue and Brenda! I don’t know much about Elizabeth Berg, but she must have a good heart to have written such a book.
