This is one of King's earlier works which I had never read. There are only a couple more, which I am rationing, lest I end up having to face the fact that there are no SK books I have not read unless a new one comes out. Luckily that seems to happen with some regularity, but it is still a fact I will resist having come to pass, at least for now.
Anyway, to the book at hand, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of reading it. Old King works have a magic to them that the new stuff still can't capture. This one was vintage King all the way, and it is refreshing to visit that world where King was new and the books were original, grisly, and full of the writer's superb tell me a campfire story phrasing. Also, it was nice to imagine the story as it was written, rather than as stop motion animation a-la the movie. Interestingly, King's visuals in this book are like written word CGI, and honestly I can't believe they even attempted to make a movie of it back then. It needs today's technology to do it justice, though why bother? It still won't be as good as the book, regardless. I do think the first person narration used through much of the book was more effective than the third person sections, because it gave the story more immediacy and power. Beyond that, it did drag a little about two thirds through, but the ending was quite spectacular. Overall, a fine visit to vintage King Land. God, I will miss it when I have read them all...
