I once read this writing tip: avoid adjectives. Hemingway has shown us how. Another thing I learned, cut the length of my sentences in half. He has shown us that too. Anyway, this book is not a manual on writing. Its depiction of "a lost generation' is haunting. Oh the torments of unrequited dreams, unfulfilled desires, unfinished lives. It's disturbing. Knowing how Hemingway's life ends makes it even more poignant reading this, his first novel.
