I'll say right upfront that this novel could be engrossing and it was an enjoyable read, but I still gave it only three stars because I found it so upsetting and maddening. I kept expecting the lead (white) character to develop some kind of awareness both of herself and of her community and world-view but nothing happened. Now I can't really blame the author for that because I in fact know people who can be and have been just as oblivious, but still, if found the whole thing rather depressing and disheartening. So it is not really the fault of the book but perhaps the intersection of this reader with this book.
