The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography
by Sidney Poitier
by Sidney Poitier
Inspiring. There's so much to learn from Poitier's life as a child, as a person, as a parent. He's not afraid to show his frailties and admit his mistakes. His take on the baby boomers and the "pleasure principle" got me agreeing with him because I think it's also so true in my country. When I was growing up and even up to now that I'm already a grown up, I often hear parents say they don't want their children to go through the same pain, the same hardships that they experienced, and so they end up shielding their children from difficulties that may serve as learning tools for them. As a parent now, I absolutely wouldn't let anything, anyone harm my child. But I also wouldn't deprive him the opportunity to learn, to unlearn, and relearn lessons in life that he experiences on his own, without my protective wings around him. This memoir is a good read.
