You know summer is over when the weather turns lousy and you're out of "Game of Thrones" books. The good news is that the fifth book in this series may well be the best yet, both in the writing and in how it addresses the weaknesses and strengths of the previous four novels. Somehow, Martin manages to tie up Book 4's irritating loose ends, and then keep going with a vengeance. More cliffhangers, of course, but there is a difference between an annoying loose end and a cliffhanger. If not for some tiny issues of proportion--i.e. too much of some characters, not enough of others--I would have given this book five stars. I just hope I don't have to wait *too* many years for Martin's next installment. And now, alas, back-to-school shopping beckons...
