Oh dear. I had been waiting to read this for a couple of years, and perhaps the expectation was too much, as I felt a bit short changed. It's by no means a bad book - I am awarding it a perfectly respectable Three Stars, after all - but it just felt a bit.... flat.
I can't fault this book on it's fresh approach, and a wealth of ideas. But perhaps the ingredients were too many in number; nothing was explored, and some of the most interesting elements were given little back story. Beyond that, there seemed to be a number of characters and themes which had no bearing on the overall narrative - perhaps something which adds depth to the world Fforde is creating, but in a book so clearly intended to be one of a series, perhaps some of these facets could have been put on the backburner until later volumes.
Overall, a lovely brainstorm of original ideas, but one that comes at the expense of character development and, in my case, reader engagement.
