Marie My husband is reading this right now, and he says it's amazing. He says it's giving him a greater understanding of the older generation's disdain for the Japanese...

John Marie, yes, the Japanese were pretty brutal in WWII. I lived in Japan from 1991-1993 and loved my time there and have many Japanese friends, but it's true, in the war, their armies did some heinous things...

Marie Yes--we lived in Japan too and have great fondness for the Japanese people.

Book Concierge This was an incredible book. The audio version - narrated by Edward Herrmann - is excellent. My father served 33 months in the Pacific. My husband is a disabled Vietnam Veteran (combat infantry officer, Airborne Ranger). Hubbie read this book and though it was great, but emotionally difficult. My father is too frail to be able to read it (he'll be 90 next week).
