Read in January, 2005
This is one of the creepiest, yuckiest children's books I've ever read. After I read it, I swore that my kids would never read it. Unfortunately, it was read to them in pre-school, giving them all kinds of bizarre beliefs, such as when you get old, you grow small again like a baby. They really believed that this literally happens based on the twisted mess that goes on in this book. The crazed and clinging mother in the book rocks the son to sleep every night, including after he grows up and moves out, she goes to his house with a ladder so that she can climb in through his window and rock him. Later, when she gets old and "turns back into a baby" (as my kids put it), he has to rock her to sleep as she's curled up in a fetal position on his lap. This book is icky, creepy, scary, maudlin, and grotesque.
