The Midnight Zoo is an intriguing tale of two boys who travel across a war ridden country by themselves carrying their baby sister. One night while going through a destroyed town they find a perfectly untouched zoo. Filled with animals they discover a world which may look like a piece of perfection but in its own way it has been shattered by the war.
This book had definite potential. The setting was one that is not common and the way the animals and the boy's past were told was complex and interesting. Each character had secrets and throughout the book you discovered something new in every page turn.
One of the minor things that let it down was that it had some plot difficulty. Once the boys arrived at the zoo it seemed to be it. After that you just found out background information on each character. There was no real climax to the story except maybe the animals being let out but that was not dramatised enough.
It's major let down was the ending. Was it a dream or did it really happen? There was not enough distinction between what was written (about them going on the raft around the world) and what actually happened (it possibly being a dream). I had to go back and re-read it several times which was disappointing, it was to confusing.

I have never read any of Sonya Hartnets books so i based in on the many other books I have read. As I said before this book defiantly had potential and it is a shame it did not use it.
