Nathaniel is a minor magician’s apprentice in a London in which the government is composed entirely of magicians. When one of his master’s colleagues humiliates him he vows revenge and learns how to call a higher level djinn named Bartimeus. In his search for retribution the two become involved in a coup of the highest level.
