Borrowed this book from my mother. I think that says it all. Because I didn't really identify with the Big Chill-esque conceit of several fortysomething friends converging for a wedding (in December, of course), it took me a while to get into the story. The "deep dark secret" that these friends share is kind of eh -- a big contrast to the twisty-turny reveals in Shreve's The Weight of Water and Light on Snow, both of which I liked a lot more. By the time this book's secret is revealed, you've already more or less figured it out, and there's no real consequence to its revelation. On top of that, the story within a story, about the Halifax explosion, seemed, at best, random (albeit like something that would make for an interesting hour of programming on The History Channel), which (again) wasn't the case with The Weight of Water.
