Richard Brautigan has this lovely way of tapping into youth... conveying a kid's unique angle on things in kid's language. There is also this accompanying sense of time that is slowed way down and very rich — luxurious. you kind of recall this from your own childhood. you vaguely remember what it was like but it's a different perspective. and when Brautigan stirs it back up toward the top it's not just the happy memories, but also the demons — the fear and sorrow and haunting experiences too, that you didn't really understand. Makes you question what mundane really is to a kid. to you as a kid. how does childhood and innocence die? abruptly? The perspective makes the sorrow in the story more profound. this is a shitty review, on my part, of one of my very favorite books. but then, i knew it would be.
