Read from August 10 to 18, 2011

Poor little rich kid of two radical hippies is kidnapped per request of mother by a sympathetic woman named Dial and spirited away to the Australian outback. Carey's feelings for Australia come to the fore in the description of the wilderness and animals to be found there. The strange and poignant story of a boy who wants only to know his parents when he is left with anyone but pulled at my heartstrings. Carey's story explores ideas of what is wilderness, what is civilization, and how the hippies mixed it up. There are great plot twists dealing with paranoia and bliss.

Patricia Because I am a fan of Peter Carey's writing, I bought this book several years ago, and am only now just reading it.
