Having read and loved Sansom's Shardlake novels, I was really looking forward to this. Unfortunately, it is only a good book, rather than a great one. The characters are rather too one dimensional to either love or hate and the prose can be a little stilted at times. In addition to that, the book could do with a bit of judicious editing - it starts so drag about three quarters of the way through and then ends abruptly, as if the author ran out of ideas. The last chapter is a real let down, rejoining the two main characters seven years after the main events in the book to give it some sort of closure. The final 'twist' in the story was so transparent that it had been telegraphed 100 pages previously!

All in all, a book worth reading if you have the time, but read Sanson's other works first to find out what the fuss is about.
