This was a fantastic book. Near the end, I could not put it down until I was finished and sure that all the rabbits were safe.

The story follows a band of rabbits who leave their home warren because Fiver, a small buck, had a vision where he saw the destruction of the warren. Unable to convince the entire warren, several convinced bucks set off looking for a new home. Hazel, Fiver's brother, serves as the leader of the group (although he never thought of himself as such) and leads them throughout their expedition. They come up on a great warren that seems to promise everything great but Fiver is worried, and the place does not feel right to him. (view spoiler) They find Bigwig trapped in some wire and close to death, and they leave this "magical" warren. After more traveling, they discover home, Watership Down, a hill that overlooks everything and serves as the perfect place for a new warren. However, the bucks soon figure that they will need does so that they can grow and make babies. They befriend a variety of animals (who prove to be useful later on), and a bird finds a warren close by that has many does, Efrafa. The rabbits set out on a journey to get these does to their warren.

Clearly, they face many troubles along the way. Fortunately, most of the rabbits come out better than before (but bearing many more scars). I enjoyed the entire story, even the mini-stories they tell of El-ahrairah. The characters come to life and you feel for them and all their struggles. By the end of the book, I was hating a bit on Man and his smelly white sticks, too!

What's also great about this is that it can serve as a great "children's" book but it also serves as a great "adult" book.
