I was given a three book set of these and felt obligated to read them since I have a policy that no book gets shelved in my house without having been read and hopefully enjoyed. I will admit that there are some books on my shelves that are merely there for aesthetic reasons. I had no idea what to expect given that I had not heard of this series before. The historical research that went into writing them is apparent, however, the books lack any sense of depth that I believe is required when attaching to a character or story. Where books for similar age groups such as Harry Potter often have an underlying humanity that is apparent within the characters as they seek to define themselves in the midst of the hardships they encounter, these books present a very shallow and incomplete representation of human conflict and perseverance. The characters are flat and rather boring at points and I often felt as though I were watching saturday morning cartoons. I think were I to read these as bedtime stories to my children they would no doubt fall right asleep...perhaps I should hang on to them...
