This book should be required reading for anyone entering the military, whether headed to combat or not. It should also be required reading for any leader considering sending anyone else into war. I got this book through First Reads and just got around to it. I would actually give it more of a 3.5. There were a few moments where Marlantes' entry into the spiritual realm was a little too much for me, but overall, I found the book to be a fascinating study & portrayal of combat, the emotions it elicits, and both the benefits and problems associated with it. I am more of a pacifist than not, but this book did give me a respect for those who serve us in the military, deepening the respect I already had. I also really appreciated Marlantes' policy suggestions for the military, and hope at least a fraction of his ideas are noticed by those in power.
