Better than chocolate!
As an Undergraduate student majoring in Medieval studies (with plans to proceed to Graduate studies), this book tasted like dessert. Innes is concise and fully informative, presenting the full spectrum of opinion before serving up his own. The timelines, maps, and chapter summaries were helpful, but the 'cherry on top' was the bibliographies found at the rear of each chapter, which offering quick summaries and recommendations for further reading based on Innes' extensive knowledge of the time period. Clearly in his element and a master of his field, any student of the Middle Ages (and early to late Antiquity) should be grateful to his fresh 'retelling' of history. My only complaint is that, given the 2004 publication date, I cannot have an updated edition to fawn over! If you're hungry for new knowledge rather than staid old accepted views, pick up a copy of this book. You won't be disappointed.
