Evil Genius (Genius, #1)
by Catherine Jinks
by Catherine Jinks
I didn't think the book was that bad at first. You get a teenage boy who happens to be very intelligent and unintentionally mischievous who attends a school where one learns the handy skills of deceit. Only problem is that Cadel has to fend for himself there. Sure, the various technological terms may be a bit overwhelming to some people but I was able to let that go due to the creativity put into the book. It was only about 200 pages later that I began to realize that the book could have been a lot shorter than its original 500 pages. It felt as if Jinks was deliberately trying to make the novel as long as possible. There were some things that really had no importance in the novel yet was detailed extensively. There were characters that really did not deserve a major role upon itself yet still received a focus of five chapters. Although there is a sequel to the book, I felt as if the author left a lot of loose ends, many of which I feel will never be answered in the next book. So while some things may fall into place, most of the twists placed in the plot either don't fit or left unanswered.
Evil Genius isn't going to be the very first book I recommend reading; it probably won't come to my mind as a recommendation unless something relevant to the topic is brought up. In the end, it's going to be one of those books that many can pick up to read if they are looking for something to pass the time or just something a little different from the trend of vampires with human girlfriends that are quite hot on the shelves right now.
