Rated highly by my new friend Susan, who got to read an advanced copy. Sounds beautiful and poignant, and sometimes that's exactly what you want to read.

I was really enthralled by the first half of this book and I could hardly put it down. The author created a lot of vivid characters and builds suspense about what happened to Victoria to ruin her childhood chance for happiness. But I got bogged down by Victoria's endlessly self-destructive choices, and I finally skipped ahead to solve the mystery and read the denouement. I liked the book a lot, but maybe it just wasn't quite what I wanted to read right now.
