Vince Flynn is a GOP loving, Glenn Beck ball licking, Fox News hounding, ULTRA-Conservative asshole of the highest degree & yet, I love his thrillers. Flynn's character, CIA counter-terrorist agent, Mitch Rapp, makes Jack Bauer look like a girl scout. He makes Brad Thor's counter-terrorist agent, Scot Harvath, look like a cub scout. Rapp's method is brute force--politics & red tape be damned!--kill 'em all because anything un-American deserves to be taking a dirt nap. It's so laughable it makes you want to cry. Why? Because it's obvious Flynn believes in his character--he believes the right-wing nutcase prose he writes as fiction.
& it's scary.
Flynn preaches through his character, Mitch Rapp, that torture works & abortion is murder all in the same paragraph of dialogue. He preaches that the ULTRA-conservative faction of the U.S.A. is the answer to saving the country from itself. He believes it is the liberals who are allowing the terrorists to win--no--they WANT the terrorists to win!
PURSUIT OF HONOR starts with Rapp trying to decide if he should turn in a CIA dept. mgr. for being a traitor (something he's judged entirely on his own), saving the taxpayers' money by putting a bullet in the man's head without due process or blackmailing him into into being his snitch for the rest of his life. All this after killing a butt-load of terrorists from the previous novel in the Rapp series (book #9)--he's a busy man. But now he has bigger fish to fry because 3 of the wanted terrorists from the previous novel escaped & are at large in the the heart of america & Mitch Rapp can't allow this to continue--they must DIE! Bullets fly, innocent NRA loving Americans are murdered (& must be avenged!), CIA operatives become turncoats, torture gains important intelligence, democratic senators become villains who are no match for Rapp's ideology & Muslim terrorists get sent to Allah via Mitch Rapp's gun! Does our hero ever get wounded? Hell no. Awesome.
You don't have to read the novel before this one & if you like counter terrorism/espionage/CIA thrillers, then you should give him a try. As I've said (especially about Brad Thor's thrillers), if the card carrying GOP nut jobs are good at anything, they write good thrillers & pile the action on. Lots of good action & if you're a liberal, good for laughs. I intend to read more of Flynn's novels because they are great fun.

Amy I'm glad I'm not the only liberal reading these and just enjoying them for the fiction that they are. I see the books for what they are, like you so well just explained, but can't help but read them devouring one after another. They make me feel dirty like I personally licked Glenn Beck's balls. Lol. But they're good books if you need something to keep your mind off of real life and are intelligent enough to see these for what they are; extremist right-wing propaganda written for an audience of tea-partiers and militia members. But if you are intelligent enough to never take these the least bit seriously, it's harmless, hard-to-put-down entertainment.

Jason I have to admit, when Mitch Rapp goes on one of his ultra-conservative bullshit rants about how liberals are enemies of the State, I get queasy in the stomach. Brad Thor doesn't do this as much & pours on the action--though his prejudice against others shows through in the violence perpetrated upon them. Thor's conservative blogs on goodreads are appalling.

But they are such guilty pleasures! I have a shelf full of them. ;)
