really liked it

Very well written book, which tries hard and succeeds in transporting the reader to the setting of this novel. I found Mr Hardy's work less pessimistic than the introduction page claimed it would be, but the life of Micheal Henchard is definitely on of the more unfortunate ones in literature.

This however, is due to his nature as a person and I found it hard to sympathise in him or his co-characters, except perhaps the grown up Elizabeth-Jane.

Its views on feminism should not be held against this book, it was merely product of the time in history where feminism has not been firmly established. It is a classic nonetheless, and is worth a read.

Interestingly enough, one page in the book made me wonder if JK Rowling chose Hagrid and Dumbledore's name from it!
