Oh, this book. Oh, this series.

As with the first time I read The Hunger Games, it took me a few pages to adjust to Collins' stylistic quirks -- especially her love of sentence fragments. No amount of defying Strunk & White, though, can deny the excellent plotting, structure, and characters of this book. I'd forgotten just how quickly and completely it can suck you in, and how Collins keeps the story going like a rock skipped over a lake: it moves so fast it never has the chance to sink, jolts of brutality and pathos hitting the reader over and over again. And the characters! Katniss! Peeta! Cinna, Haymitch, Gale, Rue (oh, Rue)! I still adore them, even when they're all taking turns ripping my heart out of my chest.

I...kind of suspect I'm going to have to re-read Catching Fire and Mockingjay pretty soon, too. Panem's an awful world, but the tales Collins has crafted about it are magnificent.
