I read this book in two days and could hardly put it down.
As usual, the way Sparks organized the plot and slipped in character details was supreme. He craftily sneaks a theme into a single chapter and manages to thoroughly explain all background without extensive dialogue or unnecessary questions, which is always refreshing.
I would say this novel definitely outranks Safe Haven but it does have it's similarities. In fact, of the novels i've read, they all seem to have recurring traits.
For example, the 10-year-old Ben has a similar personality to that of Jonah (The Last Song), the two love-birds have the same playful, teasing manner found in nearly every book, and the female lead, who has never previously shown signs of anger, practically explodes at her male counterpart at an unreasonable level during a single fight.
But during and after this tiff, of course, the male lead is reflective and pensive rather than irate. He accepts full blame and both characters are able to solve their differences very efficiently...and all is well in the world.
And as a final similarity, there's a big bad ex-husband who threatens to ruin the new life of the female and her new bo (this would be the Safe Haven reference, for all who have yet to read it).

If I were more feminist, I would be disgruntled by the fact that the naive woman always falls into the role as damsel-in-distress, or at least becomes dependent on the man in some way. Regardless, I would love for a new novel showcasing a strong, defiant female lead who the man has to rely on in some way, for a change.

Overall, i would definitely recommend this read. There aren't any steamy scenes (another commonality in Sparks' creations - and I'd like to note here that, in this book especially, I would appreciate a little foreplay before the simple conclusion that "they made love", especially when it's for the first time...just saying), nor are there any truly emotional points (at least not for me), but it was a solid, well-written read with interesting characters and a unique concept on destined lovers.
