Grisham built his reputation by giving readers a reason to cheer for his protagonists. Intriguing tales focused on complex plots and were described in artful narrative. That happens with this book too and gives us a peek at the life facing some corporate attorneys fresh from prestigious schools.

Kyle McAvoy was an undergraduate at Duquesne University when a party in his apartment resulted in rape accusation against him and several of his roommates, but the police found insufficient evidence to prosecute. Fast-forward to his last semester at Yale Law School, and the incident rears its ugly head. Rather than practicing public-interest law as he had planned, Kyle is blackmailed into spying on a corporate law mega-firm he did not intend to work for, and leads a miserable life as in associate. His “handler” expects him to supply technological information from one of his firm’s defense contractor litigants involved in a dispute that could involve hundreds of billions.

There is an expectation that at the conclusion of this tale, loose ends will tied together, but that didn’t happen. It was as if the last two or three chapters were missing. Still, until I was left in the lurch, at least I was entertained.
