In a modern day context, I wasn't very keen on this book. It is apparent that it is written for young boys at a time when sailing the seven seas was every young boys dream, and this novel certinly reflects that as it relies upon a certain degree of sailing knowledge because of the language used, which I found hard to follow at times. However, I can understand why this novel is rated so highly in literary polls as it really is the ultimate pirate adventure story and sets the benchmark for all those that follow. It is also very well written. The plot flows very well and the characters are very well written, with the 'mutineers' being very dark. I really liked the different dimensions of the book, with the dark sinister beginnings and a bit more light towards the end in Ben Gunn's cave.

Overall I think this was an OK novel. I think it is more suited in this time it was written than for a young boy of today, but can completely see its quality and mostly enjoyed reading it.
