really liked it
bookshelves: book-club, classic, fiction, humorous, rural-england, northwest-passages, strong-female
Read in August, 2011

I chose this for the Northwest Passages book group to follow on Hardy's Far the from the Madding Crowd. It's a hoot, but probably less so because most of us don't know what is being lampooned enough to know that it's being lampooned. Still, the absurdity of the characters and their situations is a lot of fun.

Also, the "star ratings" of the different literary passages are fabulous. The editor helpfully shows the reader which are the passages of high literary quality much like a travel guide by giving the passages 3 stars. Overall, a fun read for me, though some people will shake their heads and say "huh? what was that about?" Finally, beware. This book may make you afeared to go into the woodshed.
