This book is a bit of the sequel Blind Alley. It is forward 4 years but still about Jane Macquire and Cira.

It starts off with Mike (who Jane use to help take care of when they lived off the streets) gets killed. They find out that Mike was killed in error as it was suppose to be a kidnapping of Jane. In comes (Mark) Trevor who whisks her away to Scotland to McDuffs Run (castle)to keep her safe. Jane starts to have dreams about Cira again.

At the run she mets Mario who is translatting scrolls from Cira and Julius to find out where Cira's gold may be hidden. Also there is Jock, who is in a semi-state of shock, I guess I would call it. Jock is being taken care of by McDuff (who is the owner of the castle). Jock was brainwashed into being a trained killer by a man named Reilly. Reilly has a proposition for Gronek who has a hatred for everyone and has a plot to blow up two major cities in the U.S. If Gronek does not come thru then Reilly is willing to deal with Trevor in regards to the gold. Jock starts to slowly have breakthru's that he realizes that Reilly is not a nice man and needs to be stopped. In the meantime, Jane and Trevor start to explore their relationship.

Eventually they end up in Idaho where Reilly hideout is that he brainwashes people. Jock goes in to kill him leaving everyone else behind. Needless to say things to not work out as he had planned. Some twists and turns occur here like Mario stepping in and going to kidnap Jane and bring her to Reilly per his wishes.

In the end, Jane gets to read the missing scrolls from Cira and finds out if she was about to escape with Antionio from Herculeane or if she died while the volcano erupted. Jane also gets to hear a secret fro McDuff in regards to Cira. I am not going to spoil the ending here as I will let you read it to find out what exactly happens.

Overall I enjoyed this book again (I had read this originally years and years ago) though, I do have to ask, in the beginning Jane was studing for a final and from the way the book went it did not seem like she ever did get a chance to take them. Not a major (or minor) point in the story but does make one wonder if she was able to go back and finish her final before taking the semester off as she had already missed so much time being with Trevor and tracking Reilly.
