Reread for the third or fourth time since high school. The negative reviews here and on other social media sites show how far World War II has receded into the past. People seem to think that Heller was making this up; making up all the chaos and dislocation and repetition and absurdity. He wasn't. Read Roy Grinker & John Spiegel's 1945 Men Under Stress, a study by two Army Air Corps psychiatrists about induced neuroses in combat survivors, and you'll find much the same story, only without some of the jokes.
