The Keepers of the House

The Pulitzer winner for 1965 - and probably the result of the struggles of the Civil Rights movement. A great story - really, of racism and rage and unknowingly ignoring the power of family and devotion to a place. The novel follows several generations of the Howland Family in the Gulf Coast, Louisiana and when some deep-dark family history becomes public knowlegde, how the racisism and rage erupt with horrific results. The ending was not at all what I expected as I read until the last few pages when it started to come together and I was in shock.
