Very nice travelogue that describes Steinbeck's trip around the country in 1960. It was interesting how Steinbeck's America has things in common with today's, but it is also a country that no longer really exists. The last few chapters, when he travels through the South, have a lot of emphasis on "the negro problem" -- understandable given the time, but I found myself irritated with Steinbeck for his firm belief that the problem was confined to the South, and not really an issue for other states.

Paul It's been a long time since I read that book, but I seem to recall he went to some trouble to describe the concept of a pickup camper, because nobody had them at that time!
