hmmm. Tamora Pierce's books are wonderful and totally kick-ass but as far as the First Test goes I don't know... Kel seems to me to be her weakest heroine yet. Alanna, Daine, and Alianne all have very different plots from each other, but Kel's plot is very similar to Alanna's and I just don't like/affiliate with her as much. Honestly it's almost boring at parts just because I've already read about Alanna doing it better.

However, Neal gets the book a couple of points just for being such a smart-ass; he's a real and likable character. With the exception of Nawat, he's my favorite of Pierce's male characters yet.

I'm inclined to think the quarter will get better, I think she must have some surprises in store. So I'll definitely still be reading the next book. Finger crossed.
