Awkward coming of age novel. The Silent River had me screaming NOOOO at the characters because I was worried their actions were heading them toward mortal peril. This book had me screaming NOOOOOO at the main character about choices that were putting her in a kind of social peril, alienating her. Made me worry about what the author's childhood was like. Incredibly well developed characters...and there was something bizarrely sweet about the end: love among the homeless. I am torn between rating very high because it is such a unique, well-written story, with well-developed characters, and lower because it was an uncomfortable/unpleasant story in places.
