This is very nearly a great book that changed my mind about both the use of metaphor in literature and the value of literature written for the younger set. Told from the perspective of a girl on the cusp of womanhood, it is a harrowing tale of WWII that illustrates the hardships of a people who do not agree with their government's war program (sounds familiar, no?). The characters grow and learn compassion and tolerance while risking their lives to save others, which makes for a fairly inspiring read.
