Packer manipulates her audience into feeling first pity and then sympathy for a pathetic pushover of a main character who ostensibly has a big breakthrough and 'finds' herself. Packer is a dull stylist, who gets the vast majority of the details wrong about Madison and surrounding areas (she is a diletante who lived here for 2 years in the late 80s as a grad student), and has written a disaster of a novel--even for chick lit!
