Finally finished this. Dense and haunting. Luckily notes in an appendix give an idea of where Nemirovsky wanted to take the story. Still, the fact that the author was murdered gives the book a bittersweetness beyond its own story. Also fascinating is that it was written at a time where she didn't know the outcome of the war, but was obviously observant of human nature and could predict certain outcomes no matter who the victor was.
