The conclusion to The Civil War triology, this book takes off in June 1965 a few months after the war is over at Cameron Hall plantaion in Virginia. Christa, the younger sister of Jesse and Daniel is left to try and salvage as much as she can of her home and defend is from Yankees. Jesse is in DC finishing up war business and Daniel is hiding out from the Federal government that wants him brought up on charges. War has changed the south and people on both sides have lost loved ones. Callie & Jeremy lose their oldest brother, Josiah. Christa is my favorite female character and there's a whole lot of Scarlett O'Hara in her. I was moved to tears when her fiance, Liam, was killed in "And One Wore Grey" because they were deeply in love. When Liam is killed in Cold Harbor, VA, she believes she'll never love again. The only thing she has left is Cameron Hall and she risks her life to defend it, almost being raped by a Yankee when Jeremy Macauley, Callie's Yankee brother comes to her rescue. She then finds out that unless a Yankee signs for the house by midnight, that it is to be burned to the ground for the crimes of Daniel Cameron against the Federal government. Knowing Jesse is in DC and can't get there by nightfall, she convinces Jeremy to marry her in name only to save Cameron Hall. Jeremy and Christa have always hated each other, so she can't believe after the marriage is legal and the house is saved that he intends to make her his proper wife. This started out being my favorite of the triology. The first half of the book is excellent and then the last half is a little less so. Jeremy is still with the US army and is assigned to Fort Jacobson out west in the Texas/Oklahoma territories and tells Christa that she is going with him. They have many adventures with Indians and other hardships of the trip west. At about page 350, however, I found that I was really growing tired of Christa telling Jeremy how much she hated him when it was very obvious that she didn't. But, again, that's how these books go. Read this one for the first half and finish it because it's the conclusion of all three books.
