This is quite a different story from Mockingbird in its tone -- while dealing with loss and grief, it is frequently laugh-out-loud funny -- but the writing is every bit as wonderful. Mike is a 14 year old who needs to come to terms with the divergence between what he is and what his grieving, clueless father wants him to be. The book is populated with a cluster of small town eccentrics who are drawn vividly and affectionately, and the reader will come to care as much about them as Mike does. This is a great book for all ages, from upper elementary school kids to adults.
